What is the 1in5 project?
The 1 in 5 project is a place that aims to provide students with an opportunity to get involved with making an environmental difference.
The idea is that if 1 in 5 final year students base their final project (dissertation, music piece etc) on a topic involving environmental change, this will have a significant impact.
Yes- this means that we believe students from all subject backgrounds can get involved. We are currently working to provide more project examples, as so far we are limited to just a few subjects- but we are hoping that this will change soon!
In a recent survey, it was found that many young people feel betrayed, ignored and abandoned by politicians and adults in regard to the response to climate change. [1]
Why get involved?
We want to provide a space where students can produce work that will have a significant impact on the issue, with the support of various people such as academic supervisors alongside them.
Some support the project has had so far…
“For me, what makes the 1in5 project so exciting is that it takes the concerns and helplessness that so many people feel about climate and uses these anxieties to fuel one of the largest-scale research endeavours we’ve ever seen in UK higher education. Just imagine the positive impact we can make, and the knowledge we can gain, by running tens of thousands of high-quality climate projects every year across the country. This is how you change the world.” - Cardiff University's Professor Chris Chambers
“We can expand the reach of climate research into areas where it hasn’t previously existed, while helping students and staff to feel they are constructively joining an enormous community of peers and colleagues all working towards the same goal.”- Professor Greg Maio, Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath
